The expertise of the computer science department focuses on parallel and distributed systems, more specifically on distributed data management, scalable services, and autonomous computing. With its provision of consulting services to supercomputer users and development of parallel and distributed system software for clusters and the Cloud, Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin (ZIB) is in a unique position to be able to evaluate designs from both perspectives, from the HPC user’s point of view and from the Cloud researcher’s perspective. ZIB is involved indistributed systems, HPC, Cloud, and Big Data projects.
In the EU projects XtreemOS and Contrail, ZIB lead the design and implementation of the federated file system XtreemFS. In the EU projects SELFMAN, 4Caast and IES Cities, ZIB implemented the award-winning scalable transactional Scalaris key/value store.
